About
Joseph Drouhin established Maison Joseph Drouhin in 1880 as a négociant business, buying grapes and wines from local vineyards. The estate grew into one of the most important in Burgundy, producing wines from Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, and the Côte de Beaune. During World War II, Joseph's son Maurice was involved with the Resistance and escaped through the family cellars. Today, the estate is run by the great-grandchildren of Joseph Drouhin, maintaining a focus on quality and organic viticulture.
History
Joseph Drouhin founded Maison Joseph Drouhin in 1880 as a négociant business, buying grapes and newly finished wines from local vineyards and growers. His son, Maurice, began working in the business in the early 1900s and expanded the domaine by purchasing vineyards, including the famous Beaune Clos des Mouches. Maurice was succeeded by his nephew Robert in 1957, who further expanded the family business by buying more vineyards and introducing organic viticulture practices. Robert also founded Domaine Drouhin Oregon in 1987. Today, the estate is run by Robert's children, including Veronique, who is the winemaker at Domaine Drouhin Oregon. The Drouhin family has maintained a strong commitment to quality and sustainability throughout its history.
Terroir
The terroir of Joseph Drouhin is a reflection of the diverse landscapes and microclimates of Burgundy. The estate spans over 193 acres, with vineyards in Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and Côte Chalonnaise. The terroir is expressed through the unique characteristics of each vineyard, including the famous Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards such as Clos des Mouches, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot, and Corton-Charlemagne. The family's philosophy is to respect the terroir, using organic and biodynamic farming techniques to enhance the natural qualities of the soil and grapes. This approach ensures that the wines reflect the purest expression of each vineyard's terroir, making them a testament to the region's diverse and rich terroir.
