About
Dominio de Pingus is a renowned Spanish winery located in Quintanilla de Onésimo, Valladolid Province. Founded by Danish oenologist Peter Sisseck in 1995, the winery is celebrated for its exceptional wines, particularly the flagship wine Pingus. This cult wine is produced from very old Tempranillo vines, adhering to traditional en vaso viticulture and biodynamic practices. The limited production, often less than 500 cases annually, contributes to its exclusivity and high price point. The winery also produces Flor de Pingus and Amelia, showcasing Sisseck's dedication to preserving traditional winemaking techniques and promoting biodiversity in the vineyards.
History
Dominio de Pingus was founded in 1995 by Danish oenologist Peter Sisseck in Quintanilla de Onésimo, Valladolid Province. Sisseck, who also managed the Pesquera de Duero estate Hacienda Monasterio, was inspired by the old Tempranillo wines he observed in the Ribera del Duero region. He planted and developed vineyards in La Horra, using traditional en vaso system and biodynamic practices. The first vintage of Pingus, produced in 1995, was highly acclaimed by Robert Parker, who declared it one of the greatest and most exciting wines he had ever tasted.
The initial production was very limited, with only 325 cases made. The wine became scarce after a shipment disappeared off the Azores in 1997, leading to a dramatic price increase from $200 to $495 per bottle. Despite this setback, Dominio de Pingus continued to produce exclusive and highly sought-after wines, including Flor de Pingus and the special cuvée Ribera del Duero "Amelia." The winery has since expanded its operations and collaborations, including the PSI project aimed at saving old vines and promoting biodynamic practices among local grape growers[1][2][4].
Terroir
The terroir of Dominio de Pingus is deeply rooted in the La Horra area of the Ribera del Duero region in Castilla y León, Spain. This region is known for its ideal climate, characterized by hot and arid conditions that contribute to the unique characteristics of the wines produced here. The vineyards, planted with the region’s oldest vines of the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape variety, are grown using traditional en vaso (in vase) system. This method involves training the vines in a vase-like structure, which allows for better air circulation and sunlight exposure, enhancing the flavor and complexity of the grapes.
The terroir is further distinguished by the lack of fertilizers and pesticides, ensuring that the vines grow naturally and develop a rich, intense flavor profile. The combination of these factors, along with Peter Sisseck's meticulous winemaking techniques, results in wines that are both powerful and elegant, reflecting the unique terroir of the region. The wines from Dominio de Pingus are renowned for their depth, complexity, and ability to age well, making them highly sought after by wine connoisseurs worldwide.
