About
Château Pape Clément, located in Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, boasts a rich history dating back to 1252. The chateau is named after Pope Clement V, who developed an interest in wine production and managed the estate using sophisticated techniques of his time. After the Pope's departure, the chateau was renamed in his honor and continued to be managed by the Archbishops of Bordeaux.
In the modern era, Château Pape Clément was sold to Paul Montagne in 1939. His heirs renovated the estate, restoring its reputation for high-quality wines. The vineyard, known for its complex terroir of gravel, clay, and limestone, is divided into two main sections. The wine blends include 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Semillon, and 5% other varieties for the white wines, while the red wines are a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2022 vintage of the red wine is particularly notable, with a rich, lush texture and flavors of chocolate, espresso, and smoke. Certified High Environmental Value 3 (HEV3) and Bee-Friendly, Château Pape Clément is committed to sustainable practices. The wines are known for their complexity and aging potential, with some vintages reaching peak maturity between 15-50 years after the vintage.
