About
Château Haut-Bailly, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, is renowned for its exceptional red wines. The estate's history dates back to the 16th century, with significant milestones including its acquisition by Firmin Le Bailly in 1630 and its rise to fame under Alcide Bellot des Minières in 1872. After a period of decline, the estate experienced a resurgence under Daniel Sanders in 1955 and continued to thrive under subsequent owners. Today, it is owned by the estate of Robert G. Wilmers, with Veronique Sanders as general manager and Gabriel Vialard as technical manager.
The vineyard spans 30 hectares, with 60% planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% to Merlot, and 3% to Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The terroir is characterized by gravel, sandstone, and sand over limestone soils, contributing to the wine's unique character. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented in concrete tanks, and aged in 50-65% new French oak barrels for 16-18 months. The estate produces approximately 150,000 bottles annually, with a significant portion relegated to its second wine, Haut-Bailly II, and a third wine, HB. Château Haut-Bailly is celebrated for its elegant, complex, and balanced wines that embody the essence of Bordeaux's finest traditions.
