History

The Gaja winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, a member of the Gaja family who had settled in Piedmont, Italy, in the 17th century. Initially, the family operated a tavern in Barbaresco, serving their wines with the food. By the end of the 19th century, Gaja wines were bottled and supplied to the Italian army in Abyssinia. Giovanni's grandson, also named Giovanni, significantly expanded the winery's vineyard holdings and introduced the name "Gaja" in big red letters on the bottles' labels in 1937. The winery's early success was influenced by Giovanni's mother, Clotilda Rey, who instilled high-quality principles and set premium prices to maintain the product's prestige. Angelo Gaja, Giovanni's great-grandson, further propelled the winery to international fame with his innovative winemaking practices and dedication to tradition[2][4][5].

Terroir

The terroir of Gaja is deeply rooted in the unique regions of Piedmont, Italy. The winery is particularly renowned for its Barbaresco and Barolo wines, which are crafted from the indigenous Nebbiolo grape.
