About
Clos de Tart is a historic Burgundy estate known for its exceptional Pinot Noir wines. Located in Morey-Saint-Denis, it is the largest Grand Cru monopole in Burgundy, with 18.5 acres of vineyards. The estate produces two labels: Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole and La Forge de Tart Morey Saint-Denis Premier Cru. The wines are aged in new oak barrels and are renowned for their silky texture, elegance, and haunting complexity. The vineyard is certified organic and aims to convert to biodynamic practices.
History
Clos de Tart's history dates back to 1141 when Cistercian nuns from Tart Abbey acquired the vineyards. The estate was initially known as Climat-des-Forges and was renamed Clos de Tart after the nuns' acquisition. The vineyard remained in the church's possession until the French Revolution, when it was sold to the Marey-Monge family in 1791. The Mommessin family acquired it in 1932, and it was classified as a Grand Cru in 1939. In 2018, the Artemis Group, owned by François Pinault, purchased Clos de Tart for over €250 million. The estate has been owned by only four families over its 900-year history, maintaining its integrity and prestige as the largest Grand Cru Monopole in Burgundy.
Terroir
Clos de Tart is situated in the Morey-Saint-Denis commune of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits region. The vineyard spans 7.53 hectares and is bordered by Bonnes Mares in the south and Clos des Lambrays in the north. The terroir is characterized by well-drained marl and limestone scree, with subtle variations within the 27 separate plots. The vineyard is planted exclusively with Pinot Noir, and the vines are on average 60 years old, with some reaching over 100 years. The terroir's unique composition and the meticulous viticulture practices contribute to the exceptional quality of the wines produced at Clos de Tart.
